“We’re actually using the Black Census Project to gather information from Black voters about what their vision is for the future and what dreams they have for what the government should be doing, what power should be looking like in our communities.” Alexsis Rodgers, Managing Director of Strategy and Impact at Black Futures Lab, shared insights about the 2026 Black Census Project with theGrio. This year’s survey aims to reach 300,000 Black Americans and explores issues such as whether the two-party system needs to change, the role and makeup of the Supreme Court, and whether the Electoral College should be reformed to a national popular vote. Black Futures Lab spent weeks canvassing neighborhoods, texting voters, and hosting community events in Valdosta, Ga to boost turnout as Lowndes County voters sought to fill the vacant Georgia House District 177 seat once held by Dexter Sharper. “We know that these bad actors are trying to undermine our voice, our votes, because they know how much power our votes have. And it is our job as Black Futures Lab to make sure the community — our folks, Black folks — understand the importance of exercising your vote,” said Ty Swanson, Political Education Specialist for Black Futures Lab. Our longtime partners at Akonadi Foundation recently shared another blog in their Healing, Arts, and Culture series: Remembering Malcolm X Through Art and Celebration in Oakland. Demetria Huntsman, Senior Program Officer for Akonadi Foundation, reflects on her experience attending the 26th Annual Malcolm X JazzArts Festival which celebrated the power of community, culture, and collective healing. Through music, art, activism, and remembrance, the festival embodied Malcolm X’s enduring belief that Black liberation is deeply tied to cultural expression and radical imagination. “We gathered under the sun on park blankets and lawn chairs, interconnected, open, and basking in radical imagination –  San Antonio park felt alive.
