Earlier this month, the Equal Justice Society (EJS) released a special edition of their Health Equity Newsletter—Health Equity: The Origins of Modern Gynecology and the Movement Forward—which turns its full attention to the enduring legacy of reproductive injustice experienced by Black women and families. Through a powerful combination of scholarship, personal storytelling, artistic expression, and expert legal insight, the zine bears witness to historical medical exploitation while critically mapping out modern pathways toward birth equity and systemic repair. Elizabeth Lozano, a formerly incarcerated survivor of sexual assault argues that California’s prison system routinely fails to protect incarcerated women from sexual abuse by correctional staff and instead retaliates against those who report misconduct. Drawing on her own experiences and referencing a widely publicized 2024 incident at the California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, she contends that sexual violence by prison staff is systemic rather than isolated. In this op-ed for CalMatters, Elizabeth calls on California to adopt policies that prioritize the release of incarcerated survivors of staff sexual abuse, arguing that incarceration itself prevents meaningful protection or healing.
