CLIENT NEWS:
“It’s a good time to bring people in from across sectors, different backgrounds to keep our young people safe in Newport News,” said Anthony Smith, Executive Director of Cities United, during their 13th stop of the Leading the Way tour in Newport News, Virginia. The organization is on a mission to help various cities implement new community safety plans by teaching violence intervention methods, by “looking at the strengths, the weaknesses, opportunities and threats, but doing that in partnership with communities so we can build more solid strategies.” Check out more from their stop in Newport News in 13newsnow and News 3 WTKR Norfolk.
California violence intervention programs have helped a significant number of families heal from the tragedies of violent crimes. These programs, largely funded by Proposition 47, provide therapy and supports that reduce future violence and give survivors a path forward. Recent changes under Proposition 36 have put this funding at risk, threatening the stability of these essential services. Advocates, including Californians for Safety and Justice, are urging the state to provide $55 million in supplemental funding to keep the programs strong.
