As Black August comes to a close, our client Yamani Yansá Hernandez, CEO of Groundswell Fund and Groundswell Action Fund, paid homage to Black freedom fighters and Black feminist organizers both past and present in this piece for Groundswell’s blog. “There are thousands of Black Feminists devoting their lives to bringing their communities to the ballot. As Kamala Harris makes history this year as the first Black and South Asian woman atop a presidential ticket, some political organizers are hoping her candidacy will pull more women back into power. Our client and partner Diana Hwang, founder of the Asian American Women’s Political Initiative (AAWPI), told Politico she’s hopeful Harris will create that positive momentum after seeing progress toward gender equality in politics recede in 2024. “Politics is war, so we need to create the opposite — build a new kind of political power that is rooted in love and joy and lifting each other up.” Read more of Diana’s thoughts in this article from Politico.
“Most Americans don’t know what it took to run elections securely, transparently, accessibly, and with integrity in the midst of a pandemic. Many of the challenges we saw in 2020 continue to exist to this day. That’s why I decided to write this book,” stated Jackie Wu, author of On the Front Lines of Democracy: An Election Official’s Story of Protecting the Vote in 2020. There aren’t many stories told from the perspective of election officials. In this book, Jackie sheds light on what happens behind the scenes so readers can get a better understanding of election officials and how supporting them will support democracy for us all.
